Candidate Information Session

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will be presenting a Candidate Information Session on Monday, September 20, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber. 

All nominated candidates are invited to attend.

Regardless of information provided on this website, or directly from the Elections Office, it is a Candidate's responsibility to ensure that they have complied with the Municipal Elections Act 1996, and any other relevant legislation pertaining to Municipal Elections.

Nominations

Nominations, in the prescribed form, may be filed in the Office of the Clerk, 71 Main St. West, 1st Floor, Hamilton from January 4, 2010 to September 9, 2010 during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), and on September 10, 2010, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The term of elected office will be from December 1, 2010 to November 30, 2014.

Under Section 29(1) of the Municipal Elections Act – “A person may be nominated for an office only if, as of the day the person is nominated:

a)  he or she is qualified to hold that office under the Act that creates it; and
b)  he or she is not ineligible under this or any other Act or otherwise prohibited by law to be nominated for or to hold the office.”

Nomination and Declaration of Qualification forms will be available in the Clerk’s Department and Municipal Service Centres on January 4, 2010.

The following must be provided at the time of submission:

  • A signed Nomination form
  • A signed Declaration of Qualification form by the candidate
  • The prescribed filing fee of $200.00 for the Head of Council and $100 for all other offices. (The filing fee is payable by cash, certified cheque or money order.)
  • Candidate identification (Government issued photo identification)

Qualifications

To run for Office you must be:

  • a resident of the City of Hamilton, or an owner or tenant of land in the City of Hamilton, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years old; and
  • not prohibited by any law.

Candidates for School Board Trustee must reside within the Board area and be a supporter of that Board.
