The purpose of the City of Hamilton Risk Management Services (RMS) is to develop and administer programs to protect the physical and financial assets of the Corporations against accidental losses which could otherwise significantly reduce those assets or affect the Corporations’ ability to fulfill their mandated responsibilities. Integral to this process, is to assist in providing and maintaining the safest possible conditions in the City of Hamilton workplace and in the delivery of services, in order to protect employees and the overall public.

At the same time, the RMS must, of course, strive to do so in a cost-effective manner.

In order to accomplish these objectives, the RMS is committed to the application of a sound risk management process. The process includes, a systematic approach to the anticipation and identification of loss exposures; the analysis of those exposures in terms of frequency and severity; the application of risk control measures, including the financing of risk consistent with Corporate financial resources; and the direction and management of claims made against the Corporations.

RMS functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Procurement and maintenance of optimum insurance coverage suitable to meet the needs of the City of Hamilton; including determination of appropriate coverage limits, and self-insurance levels and related funding provisions.
  • Ongoing review of contracts, leases, special events, etc., in order to effectively address inherent risk exposures.
  • Administration of claims, in order to achieve fair, equatible and reasonable resolvement / settlement of same.
  • Provision of ongoing risk management advice, in particular, in the area of loss control, to all Corporate departments.
