Preparing for Emergencies

All it takes is 3 simple steps to get prepared for emergencies!

Knowing what risks we face in the City of Hamilton can help you better prepare.

Make a plan
Every family should have an emergency plan. It will hlep your family know what to do in the event of an emergency.

Get a kit
In order to be self sufficient for up to 72 hours you will need some basic supplies.

In an Emergency

When an emergency occurs you should:

  • Follow your emergency plan
  • Get your 72 hour kit
  • Make sure you are safe before assisting others
  • Listen to the radio or television for information from authorities and follow their instructions
  • Stay put until all is safe or you are ordered to evacuate


Evacuations

Person evacuating, water off, unplug items, lock the door 

 If you are asked to evacuate 
 take:

  • Your 72 hour kit
  • Your emergency plan
  • A cellphone if you have one
  • Your pets
  • Essential medications and prescriptions
  • Leave immediately and follow travel routes identified by authorities
Protect your home:

  • Shut off water and gas if officials as you to
  • Leave natual gas on unless officials as you to turn it off
  • Lock your home

Shelter in Place

Family sheltering in their home   Local authorities will advise you to stay in your home during an
 emergency when the air outside is not safe to breathe. They will ask
 you to shelter in place.

 How to shelter in place:
  • Close windows and doors
  • Turn off fans, heat, and air conditioning systems
  • Close the fireplace damper
  • Locate your 72 hour kit
  • Move to an interior room above ground level
  • Tape around windows, doors and air vents
  • Listen to the radio for udpates and do not go outside until authorities say it is safe to do so
