BUILDING SAFETY MONTH – May 2012

Building Safety Month is an annual global event intended to promote safe buildings; raise public awareness of the importance of building regulations, such as the Ontario Building Code; and, recognize the vital role of dedicated Building Officials in contributing to ensure a safe built environment.  In recognition of Building Safety Month the Building Services Division will be holding some special events during the third week of May (May 14th to May 18th) at City Hall on the third floor.

The Building Services Division's first priority is public safety. This Division works with residents, businesses and developers to administer and enforce the Ontario Building Code and various by-laws, issues building permits and zoning verifications, administer rehabilitation loan and grant programs and provide customer service on a wide range of construction projects.

The Building Services Division provides three distinct services:

Customer Service

• Small scale residential building permits  (e.g. houses, townhouses, decks, etc.)
• Building Permit fees and Development Charges
• Building permit submission requirements and applications
• Swimming Pool Enclosures
• Alterations to lot grading
• Online Building Permit Query  (New)

Building Engineering and Zoning

• Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Permits
• Large scale residential  (e.g. apartment buildings)
• Zoning Inquiries

Building Inspections

• Building Inspections and Building Code Enforcement
• Understand property owner's and contractor's responsibilities
• Access Construction summaries and statistics of monthly building and demolition permit activity within Hamilton
