Puppies less than 6 months of age may be licensed at the altered rate for the first year. Upon renewal, documentation indicating the dog is spayed or neutered must be provided in order to continue to receive the discount.
Certified Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Police Work Dogs are licensed free of charge. A Certificate must be provided at the time the licence is obtained and a copy will be kept on file.
If the dog is altered (spayed or neutered) documentation must be provided in order to receive the discounted rate. A copy of the documentation will be kept on file.

$37.00 | Healthy Wildlife Removal and Euthanasia from Private Trap: $98.00 Healthy Wildlife Removal and Release from Private Trap: $59.00 Please note that only nuisance wildlife animals may be euthanized in accordance with The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act which defines "Nuisance Wildlife" as wildlife that is damaging or about to damage property. Property owners are responsible for managing nuisance wild animals on their property including any costs.
Other alternatives to deal with wildlife are available by contacting a wildlife removal agent listed in the yellow pages of the telephone directory. For more information regarding handling wildlife, please visit the Ministry of Natural Resources website and perform a search for "Nuisance Wildlife".
Animal Control Policies
The Reduced Rate applies to the animal owner:
- Senior - who is 65 years of age and older. Proof of age must be provided at the time the licence is purchased.
- Government Disability Pension - whoever receives a Government Disability Pension. Proof must be provided at the time the dog licence is purchased and a copy will be kept on file.
Refunds and Credits Refunds or credits may be requested for the following reasons:
- In the event that an owner pays for their animal licence and the animal passes away or is put to sleep on or before 30 days from the date of purchase, returns the dog tag and provides documentation that the dog has been put to sleep or has passed away.
- In the event that a dog owner pays the fee for an unaltered dog and provides documentation that the dog has been spayed or neutered within 30 days of the purchase of the licence.
Any requests for credit or refund that exceed the 30 day period shall not be entitled to the refund or credit. All requests for refund or credits must be requested in writing to the Supervisor of Animal Control Services, 247 Dartnall Road, Hamilton ON L8W 3V9.
Update Licence Information To keep our files current, please call our office at 905-574-3433 ext 4 or fax our office at 905-546-4044 to report changes and/or corrections regarding address, animal deceased or other status.
All Notifications of Renewal for Licences are a Courtesy Only Failure to receive a licence renewal notice or any other notification does not exempt any dog or Vietnemese Pot Bellied pig owner from their legal requirement to maintain a valid licence for their animal.
Compliance with the Law All owners are required to be in compliance with all federal, provincial, and municipal legislation and laws. Issuance of a licence does not give permission or consent to be in non-compliance.
Veterinarian Expenses While your animal is in the care of the City of Hamilton Animal Control, staff will make every effort to ensure its saftey and health care. It may be necessary for a Veterinarian to examine and/or treat your animal. You as the owner are responsible for any expenses incurred by the City of Hamilton Animal Control.
Ontario Rabies Immunization Regulation 567 Ontario Rabies Immunization Regulation 567 under the Health Protection and Promotion Act requires every owner in the City of Hamilton having the care and custody of a cat or dog three (3) months of age or older shall ensure that the animal is immunized against rabies.
