Waste (garbage) Chutes Review

Provide Your Input on Waste (garbage) Chutes
(Complete and Online Survey or Filling Out a Printed Survey)

The City of Hamilton is looking for the public to provide their input on Waste/Garbage Chutes in apartment buildings. Waste management has changed significantly over the last ten years. These changes (i.e. separation of recyclable materials – plastic, paper, glass etc.) have made parts of the Property Standards By-law outdated and in need of changes. At this time tools, such as green bins and blue boxes, are primarily available to residents in single family homes and low-rise apartments. In order to have all Hamilton residents participate in waste reduction we need to make these tools more accessible and convenient for residents who live in hi-rise apartments.

How to Provide Input:

  1. Complete the online survey OR
  2. Pick up a survey from one of the following locations:

Deadline for completing the surveys is March 26, 2010

REASONS TO BRING THE RECYLING PROGRAM TO ALL APARTMENTS

If an apartment does not have the tools (i.e. Blue and Green boxes and bins) to recycle; all waste collected at apartment buildings goes to Hamilton's one and only landfill site. By setting up recycling programs at all apartment buildings and by providing helpful tools like Blue Carts, Blue Bags, brochures and posters tenants are given the chance to recycle and helps keep recyclables out of the landfill. As well, the goal of 65% diversion of waste from landfill becomes more doable!

The Green Cart Program is the right choice.
By making better decisions about how you get rid of your waste you are helping protect the environment (remember the composition of the waste isn't changing, you're just using different containers to put it in). The Green Cart Program has the potential to divert 43% of the current waste going to landfill, another 42% of household waste is recyclable in your blue boxes, and so only 15% is truly garbage.

We can only do this with your help, which includes participation in the Green Cart Program. In order to help us achieve the 65% diversion goal, 9 out of every 10 residents must recycle 9 out of every 10 pop cans AND 9 out of every 10 residents must compost 9 out of every 10 banana peels.

The Green Cart Program collects household organic waste separate from
Blue Box recyclables and garbage. A Green cart is a large green, rigid plastic cart with wheels that you put your household organic waste in. It is collected at your curb weekly.
