Disabled Parking

The City's permit parking program can be used to provide disabled residents with convenient on-street parking near their residence in cases where off-street parking is not available.

Hamilton Municipal Parking System can provide an eligible applicant with a single "No Parking Except by Permit" parking space, near their home, and issue a permit to the applicant.

Parking permits are issued at no cost to the eligible applicant.

To be eligible to apply for a disabled parking permit the applicant must:

  • Must hold a Disabled Person Parking Permit from the Ministry of Transportation, valid for a period of not less than 7 months.
  • Provide proof that the vehicle to which the parking permit will be affixed is registered to your address, either in your name or in the name of another person residing at your address.
  • Be the operator of the vehicle or be dependent upon another person, who resides at the same address for transportation.
  • Have no suitable off-street/driveway parking available.

Permits are not issued to any vehicle:

  • Which exceeds 4500 kilograms; or,
  • Which exceeds 6.4 metres (21') in length; or,
  • Which is equipped with dual rear wheels or tandem rear axles; or,
  • Which is a tow truck; or,
  • Which is a bus, or a bus converted for other use; or,
  • Which is not a “motor vehicle”.

Other Information You Should Know

  • City of Hamilton parking permits must be renewed on or before January 1st of each year.
  • Reserved disabled parking can be implemented subject to City Council’s approval of a by-law and, where necessary, with the consent of a neighbour.
  • The reserved disabled parking permit is for the use of the approved parking space only.
  • Parking and stopping regulations must be obeyed when parked at all other locations.
  • Permits are issued only to passenger vehicles or commercial vehicles registered with the Ministry of Transportation as “Personal use only.”
  • Visitor parking is not allowed in disabled permit parking areas.
  • To avoid a parking ticket when parking in the permit parking space, be sure to affix the City of Hamilton parking permit facing outward from the inside of the windshield on the driver’s side with the bottom of the permit approximately 8 cm to 15 cm (3” to 6”) above the dashboard.

What does my Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Disabled Person Parking Permit (blue permit) exempt me from?

In Hamilton only, the MTO Disabled Person Parking Permit exempts you from:

  • Paying at on-street parking meters for a maximum of 3 hours, but not during a morning or afternoon rush hour as indicated on the meter.
  • Paying at unattended municipal car parks.
  • Parking time limits on City streets.

You are entitled to use any parking space on private or municipal property designated as Reserved Disabled Person Parking. Payment may be required in some parking lots.

Note: All other parking regulations must still be obeyed.
