Special Events Parking

Each year the City of Hamilton is home to a number of exciting summer festivals. In order to balance the parking needs of the area residents while accommodating parking for special events such as the Canada Day Celebration at Bayfront Park and the Winona Peach Festival at Winona Park, the City of Hamilton implements a parking plan to minimize the impacts. The program prohibits parking by all motorists within the boundaries except residents and their visitors, who have obtained the required Special Event Parking Permit(s).

In past years, residents experienced serious parking difficulties since the streets were occupied by visitors to the festivals. They could not entertain guests, leave their homes for shopping or pleasure trips, and safety was often compromised when cars were parked on both sides of a street which would obstruct access by emergency vehicles. As a result, staff was directed to implement the program on the residents' concerns.

If you live on a street where the Special Event Parking regulation is in effect, the City will send you a permit each year before the festival season begins. If you require additional permits for yourself or your visitors, you will be required to come in to our office at 80 Main Street West at Summers Lane to receive your permits. Permits for the Winona Peach Festival are also available at the Stoney Creek Municipal Service Centre at 777 Highway #8.

Temporary advisory "Special Event Parking By Permit Only" signs are placed at all major entrance points to identify the restricted parking areas. General public parking will not be permitted on the residential streets within the defined boundary.

If you are planning an event

The Parking Services Section administers Special Event parking. Event Organizers may be responsible for costs associated with the installation of special event parking signs, the temporary “bagging” of parking meters and any lost revenue resulting from the “bagging” of the meters or the use of Municipal Car Parks to accommodate special events.

Prior to an event, a Permission to Enter a Municipal Car Park Form must be obtained if the full or partial use of Municipal Car Parks is required.
