Planning Division

The Planning Division helps shape the look and feel of our City by working with communities, developers, and other City divisions and departments to set goals and policies for community change and development. This Division also reviews and approves various planning applications and offers business facilitation services.

Planning Division provides the following specialized resources:

Community Planning and Design

  • Community and neighbourhood plans, including Secondary Plans
  • University and College neighbourhoods (Town and Gown)
  • Cultural heritage designation, permits, funding programs, applications, and volunteer committees
  • Strategies and programs for protecting, enhancing, and monitoring Hamilton's natural areas and their ecological functions
  • Completed and proposed urban design projects (e.g. York Boulevard Streetscape)

Development Planning

  • Compliance to Provincial Plans, Policies and Guidelines
  • Processing and Review of Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment Applications
  • Processing and Review of Draft Plans of Subdivision / Condominium Applications
  • Processing, Review and Approval of Site Plan Control Applications
  • Committee of Adjustment
  • Part-Lot Control
  • Subdivision Street Naming and Numbering
  • Sign Variances
  • Business Facilitation
