Heritage Planning Section
The Heritage group manages archaeology, built heritage and cultural heritage landscapes (the 'ABCs' of heritage planning) for the City of Hamilton. Heritage staff work with stakeholders, standing Committees, other city staff, and citizens to administer heritage permits, answer requests to designate properties under the Ontario Heritage Act, publish resource documents, manage heritage databases, provide input on secondary plans, review specific development applications and develop policy documents and strategies that oversee heritage management throughout the City.
This Section offers a variety of resources:
Committees:
- The Hamilton Municipal Heritage Committee (HMHC) and its various subcommittees and Heritage Conservation District Advisory Committee
- Advise Council on heritage matters
Designation:
- Respond to requests for designation
- Registration and listing of heritage properties
Funding Program:
- Hamilton Community Heritage Fund (HCHF)
Heritage Permits:
- Resources required to apply for a Heritage Permit
- Due dates for applications and subcommittee meeting dates
- List and status of current Heritage Permit Applications received
Resources:
- Seven volumes of information on archaeology, built heritage, cultural heritage landscapes and cemeteries have been published by the Heritage group
- Data on properties designated under Parts IV and V of the Ontario Heritage Act
- Inventory of Buildings of Architectural and/or Historical Interest, Canadian Inventory of Historic Building for Hamilton, Registered Archaeological Sites, Cemeteries and Burial Grounds and Places of Worship (former municipalities)
- City of Hamilton Register of Property of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest
