Waterdown - Study Areas

Project Overview
The City of Hamilton is preparing Secondary Plans for the Waterdown North and Waterdown South study areas. The purpose of the studies is to establish land uses, a transportation network, community facilities, infrastructure requirements, development standards and to protect the existing natural features and environmental resources. In June 2002, the Executive Council of the Provincial Cabinet of Ontario approved Official Plan Amendment (OPA) No. 28 which brought lands into the urban boundary. OPA No. 28 lands consist of three distinct areas:

  • Waterdown North (120 hectares)
  • Waterdown South (180 hectares)
  • Upcountry Estates (54 hectares)

The City of Hamilton has chosen to integrate the Secondary Planning and Master Planning processes, with the Class Environmental Assessment process, in accordance with Schedule A.2.9 of the Municipal Engineers Association Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000). Accordingly, this will be a comprehensive approach to land use and infrastructure planning within the study area and the fulfillment of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment requirements for undertakings resulting from the master planning processes. This will involve a process of problem/opportunity identification, alternative solutions identification, inventory of the natural, social and economic environments, an evaluation of alternative solutions and the selection of a preferred solution. When the project is finished the result will be a new:

  • Secondary Plan for Waterdown North
  • Secondary Plan for Waterdown South
  • Transportation Master Plan for Waterdown
  • Class Environmental Assessment for future municipal projects in the area

Waterdown North & South Report

The “Waterdown North” and “Waterdown South” background paper presents a summary of trends and outlines existing conditions within theses areas. The intent of the profile is to assist in the “Waterdown North” and “Waterdown South” secondary plan team in its preparation of two secondary plans. It provides a compilation of the background information available relevant to the study, especially the land use component, to help prepare informed recommendations on land use. Based on this report several areas of interest are reviewed and should be considered for secondary planning.

The purpose of the Open House was to provide the Waterdown community and surrounding areas with an overview of all studies currently being completed for the area and to receive input and comment from interested persons on land use issues. Over 100 participants attended the open house.

The following information panels were displayed at the June 17, 2004 Open House.
