Downtown Zoning By-Law

Hamilton's New Zoning By-Law

In 2001, the City of Hamilton released a vision for what the Downtown should be; it was called "Putting People First". The new idea of Downtown was created by both the City and the public to improve what the Downtown is today. Now, the City of Hamilton has taken one more step to help this happen.

"Putting People First" was created by both the City and the public to imporve what the Downtown is today.

From Plan to Action
"From Plan to Action" is the start of the new Zoning By-law for the Downtown and the first stage of the new Zoning By-law for the City. "From Plan to Action" will help divide the way that land is used in the Downtown area. For example, a neighbourhood with a lot of houses might be protected as a "Residential" area. Generally, an area will be zoned for what is there.

The downtown will be separated into zones so that it is easy to know what is allowed to be built there. People can look at the new Zoning By-law to see what is permitted in each zone.
