West Chedoke Waterfall Access
The Study:
The City of Hamilton has initiated a study to consider a range of options to provide public access from the Chedoke Stairs into view the West Chedoke Waterfall Cluster. The City, in partnership with the Hamilton Conservation Authority and the Bruce Trail Conservancy, wish to promote outdoor healthy living by enhancing Hamilton’s extensive trails network with an opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the waterfall area.
The study will investigate and assess the feasibility of public access along the edge of the Chedoke Creek channel to viewing areas near each of the four waterfalls behind the Chedoke Golf Course Club House.
The Process:
Preliminary fieldwork was completed by Hamilton Conservation Authority and the City of Hamilton during 2005 and 2006 to inventory all of Hamilton’s waterfall locations. The West Chedoke waterfall cluster was ranked within the highest inventory category (“excellent”, based on natural waterfall characteristics) for priority for the development of public access. A key component of the project will be effective consultation with area residents and businesses, particularly in areas within walking proximity of the Escarpment Rail Trail. Additional Public Information Centres will be held throughout the course of the study and advertisements will be published with the details. Upon completion of the study, final concept plan will be prepared to document the findings of the study and the recommendations. Another advertisement will be published at that time, indicating where and how the public can have access to the plan.
Public Information Centre
A Public Information Centre was held on May 8, 2008 at the Chedoke Golf Course Clubhouse to allow area residents and businees owners with an opportunity to meet City staff and review the proposed design.
