Winona Park is also home to the "Winona Peach Festival" an international three day event with attendance well over 230,000 people. 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the Winona Peach Festival.
The City of Hamilton through its Landscape Architectural Services Section (LAS) ia undertaking the redevelopment of Winona Park. The Winona Park Master Plan was prepared in-house by LAS staff in consultation with members of the Winona Peach Festival Committee (WPFC), the City's Community Services Department, Recreation Division and other internal staff. This Master Plan was presented to area residents at a public meeting held on June 21, 2005 showing the location and layout of facilities within the park. Since that time slight modifications have been made but in no way circumvent the intent of the original master plan.
Residents are well aware of the existing site features which include developed parkland, a woodlot, Scout Hall, Picnic Pavilion, "Peach Festival Hut" storage building and commemorative pillars. Recreational and sports facilities include a creative children’s playstructure and lit softball diamond. With the recent completion of Phase I of the Park Redevelopment of Winona Park the large open space area to the east of the woodlot has been developed and now consists of a Class "C" soccer field, asphalt parking lot, surface and subsurface drainage system, asphalt pathways, seating areas and tree plantings.
Phase II of the Park Redevelopment of Winona Park is for the continued phased redevelopment, detail design and construction of several programmed amenities that will include a spray pad/water play feature, pavilion/sun shelter, sanitary sewers, asphalt walkways, lighting, site grading, sodding, tree planting, and site furniture, in accordance with the final Functional Plan. The public tendering of this project will be completed by the first week of December. It is anticipated Phase II will be constructed in time for the opening day of all splash pads throughout the City which is on July 1, 2012.
