THE STUDY
The City of Hamilton has initiated the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process to develop a Bridges Master Plan for two bridges. After an initial assessment, the City of Hamilton has identified the need to reconstruct, rehabilitate, and/ or alter a number of bridges within the City’s jurisdiction due to deteriorating conditions that have affected the structures’ integrity. The Master Plan will take into account site-specific sensitivities, opportunities and constraints to arrive at site-specific planning solutions. These two bridges are located within the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s watershed. The City of Hamilton recognizes the need to develop a Bridges Master Plan that will outline a planning framework for the construction and alteration of 2 bridges over 40 years old, and in urgent need of repair. The bridges are:
-
Structure 95 – Thorpe Street (60 m south of Dundas Street), Dundas
-
Structure 297 – Main Street (120 m south of Governors Road), Dundas

(Click for larger map of bridge locations)
The Master Plan will, at a minimum, address Phase 1 (Problem or Opportunity) and Phase 2 (Alternative Solutions) of the Municipal Class EA process. In addition, each bridge will be assessed for its heritage value and the heritage data collected will be considered in decisions that may alter its structure.
THE PROCESS
The Class EA Master Plan approach is being undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (June 2000). Upon completion of the study, a Project File Report will be available for public review and comment. Another advertisement will be published at that time, indicating where and how the public can have access to the report.
