Lower East End Storm Drainage Study and Stormwater Management Investigation

THE STUDY

The City of Hamilton has initiated the Lower East End Storm Drainage Study and Stormwater Management Investigation. A number of areas within the Lower East End of Hamilton have experienced flooding problems during the last three major summer storm events. These three events occurred on July 26th and August 19th, 2005 and July 10th, 2006. Flooding was also recently experienced in some areas on December 1, 2006. The purpose of the project is to investigate the problem areas with respect to the capacity of the drainage system in order to understand the causes of the flooding problems and to investigate and recommend potential remedial measures, including opportunities for stormwater management facilities.

The Study Area includes the area with the highest concentration of reported flooding problems and as such is
approximately bound by Wentworth St. to the west, Lawrence Road to the south; Red Hill Creek to the east and extending just north of Barton St. to the north as shown on the map (see hatched area). The map also shows the approximate boundary of the drainage systems that will be under investigation.

THE PROCESS

A key component of the project will be effective consultation with area residents and businesses, particularly in areas that have experienced drainage problems. Additional Public Information Centres will be held throughout the course of the study and advertisements will be published with the details.

Upon completion of the study, a study report will be prepared to document the findings of the study and the
recommendations. Another advertisement will be published at that time, indicating where and how the public can have access to the report.
