The Adopt-a-Park program is a year round volunteer program through which volunteers can help maintain and care for the green spaces, trees, flower and shrub beds in their local community park. The Adopt-a-Park Program is designed to help keep Hamilton parks attractive and safe with the ultimate goal to engage park users and community groups in creating and preserving clean and safe parks for everyone. Litter and graffiti removal as well as beautification efforts help to create great parks and...

What can an adopt-a-park group do?

Volunteers can pick up litter and debris, rake leaves, remove graffiti, report park hazards, sweep courts and pathways, pull weeds and perform shrub bed maintenance. Some Adopt-a-Park groups have fundraised to plant native trees, enhance park amenities such as benches, play structures and so much more. The Community Liaison Coordinator works closely with the Adopt-a-Park group to plan and perform these activities.

Many of our Adopt-a-Park groups participate in the annual Recreation & Parks Month Activities or the Extreme Park Makeover. The 2009 Report,  2010 Report and 2011 Report contain all the information about these exciting initiatives as well as the outstanding success stories.

In recognition for the valuable contribution of our Adopt-a-Park groups an Adopt-a-Park sign with the name and/or logo of the group is installed at the park.

How do we Adopt-a-Park?

Get a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers together to start your adopt-a-park group. Your group can be made up of members from community groups, service clubs, neighbours, friends, seniors, local school children and business owners. Everyone can make a difference.

Complete the Adopt-a-Park Application Form or call 905-546-CITY(2489). The application is reviewed and our City staff will work with your group on adopting your park. The City will provide your group with safety training, and the equipment and supplies to conduct your adopt-a-park activities.

Then your team can start creating a better park. Your group will start ensuring that your park is clean, inviting, safe and full of positive park use. Great parks need vision, leadership, planning, resources, partnerships, and stewardship. Great parks need YOU!

Complete the Adopt-a-Park Application Form. Once your application is processed, your volunteer group will receive training and support for your
Adopt-a-Park activities!

Great parks make great neighbourhoods!

Well-kept parks and public green spaces boost urban economies. They create a positive impression for visitors and make cities more appealing to tourists. Good parks also help attract and retain residents along with the businesses that employ them. Parks are part of the “green infrastructure” that improves our local environment.

  • Green space prevents flooding and improves quality of water
  • Trees in parks clean air by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen
  • Plant material create habitats for birds
  • Parks provide natural beauty and become neighbourhood gathering places
  • Parks offer play space for children and promote physical activity and better health for all

For many reasons, great parks have a vital role in our environment and have a positive impact on our community and on the quality of life for our residents.
