Adopt-a-Park Program
Great parks make great neighbourhoods!
The Adopt-a-Park program is a year program for volunteers to maintain and care for trees, flowers and shrub beds in their local park. The ultimate goal of the Adopt-a-Park Program is to engage park users and community groups in creating and preserving clean and safe parks for everyone. Volunteer clean up efforts create great parks and great parks make great neighbourhoods!
Watch this video to find out more about the Adopt-a-Park program!
How it works
Adopt-a-Park groups sign up to take care of a park for three years. The group must host litter clean ups, add woodchips or mulch for trees, remove or report graffiti and weed shrub beds at least four times each year.
Some Adopt-a-Park groups have held events to promote park usage or fundraise for park enhancements such as benches, trees, play structures and more.
Many of our Adopt-a-Park groups participate in the annual Recreation & Parks Month Activities or the Extreme Park Makeover. The 2009 Report, 2010 Report and 2011 Report contain all the information about these exciting initiatives as well as the outstanding success stories.
In recognition for the valuable contribution of our Adopt-a-Park groups an Adopt-a-Park sign with the name and/or logo of the group is installed at the park.

Great parks make great neighbourhoods!
Well-kept parks and public green spaces boost urban economies. They create a positive impression for visitors and make cities more appealing to tourists. Good parks also help attract and retain residents along with the businesses that employ them. Parks are part of the “green infrastructure” that improves our local environment.
- Green space prevents flooding and improves quality of water
- Trees in parks clean air by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen
- Plant material create habitats for birds
- Parks provide natural beauty and become neighbourhood gathering places
- Parks offer play space for children and promote physical activity and better health for all
For many reasons, great parks have a vital role in our environment and have a positive impact on our community and on the quality of life for our residents.
