What to expect on spray days
If you live inside an area being sprayed...
A twin-engine helicopter with an ultra low volume spray system will fly about 15 to 30 metres (50 to 100 feet) above the tree tops to apply the biological pesticide Btk. There will be two aerial spray applications, approximately five days apart. Spray applications are weather dependent and occur between the hours of 5:30 am and 8:00 am.
The use of Btk to control Gypsy Moths poses minimal risk to human health when used as directed and has very low potential for adverse public health impacts. No special precautions are necessary. If you choose, you can avoid exposure to Btk by remaining indoors during and immediately after the spraying. You can also cover patio furniture outdoor playing areas prior to the spraying or hose them off afterward.
Road Closures
To minimize risks for you and your property, temporary local road closures at key intersections will occur during spray days within the identified spray zones. Road closures will typically last for 5 to 20 minutes and in urban areas will take place between the approximate hours of 5:00 am and 8:00 am.
All 9-1-1 emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) will be able to access all spray zone areas at all times – even during treatment times. They will have full unrestricted access to all properties during the aerial spray control program.
Spray Day Cancellation
If a spray application is going to be cancelled, a decision will ideally be made 12 to 24 hours in advance of the specified date. However, last minute cancellations are possible. Be sure to tune in to local radio and television stations, visit this Web site or call the Gypsy Moth Information Line (905 540-5618) for up-to-date information on aerial spraying activity and temporary road closures.
If you live outside an area being sprayed...
Zimmer Air Services will be using state-of-the-art equipment including GPS technology to identify precise spray application zones. With this advanced technology, spray drift is not expected to exceed 200 metres (220 yards) from the border of the spray zone.
Temporary local road closures will occur during spray days within the identified spray zones. Road closures will typically last for 5 to 20 minutes and in urban areas will take place between the approximate hours of 5:00 am and 8:00 am.
If you normally travel through these areas between 5:00 am and 8:00 am, expect some delay. Consider taking an alternate route or changing your travel times. Check the Gypsy Moth Aerial Spray Program Bulletins for information on what roads may be affected.
