Trail Etiquette
Trail Etiquette:
Safety is everyone's concern! Here are some suggestions to ensure everyone enjoys using the trails.
-
Pedestrians always have the right-of-way on the trails.
-
Cyclists and in-line skaters must yield to pedestrians and please give audible warning when passing.
-
Please do not litter.
-
Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Clean-up after your pets.
-
Protect and do not disturb wildlife.
-
Leave flowers and plants for others to enjoy. Please be aware that non-paved areas of the trails are vulnerable to damage from footwear and wheels, especially after a rain.
Glossary of Trail Terms:
Accessible: Suitable for wheelchairs, people using walking aids, or pushing baby strollers. Accessibility is determined by the trail surface and the slope/grade (whether the trail is level or steep).
Bike Lane: For bicycles only, usually within a road allowance.
Bike Path: For bicycles only, in areas other than a road allowance.
Bike Route: The overall system for cyclists, comprising lanes and paths.
Multi-Use Trail: Has a variety of surfaces (grass, pavement, asphalt, cement) and is not usually meant for motorized vehicles. The trail is for use by more than one kind of user. Multi-Use does not necessarily mean there is accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers.
On-Road: On a road or street and not apart from it, such as a laneway running alongside.
Off-Road: Apart from the road, though it may run alongside.
Slope/Grade: Gentle is 1-3%. Moderate is 4-6%. Steep is 7-9%. Not Suitable is 10% plus.
