Watershed
In 1997 the Region of Hamilton-Wentworth (now the City of Hamilton) sponsored a process for developing a community based watershed plan for the Red Hill Creek watershed. This action was part of its commitment to assess the impact of the Red Hill Valley Project on the entire watershed.
The purpose of the plan was to develop an ecosystem based approach to planning as a framework for any activity that occurred in the watershed. It was an important basis for understanding what we know about the natural, social and economic conditions and issues in the watershed, as well as providing a set of goals and actions.
Approximately 30 stakeholders representing community groups, municipalities, businesses, federal and provincial agencies and major institutions worked together for a year and a half to develop this first generation plan. Each stakeholder (including members of several working groups) brought their organization’s area of interest or mandated responsibility to the table. A team of technical consultants conducted background studies and assisted participants throughout the process.
The following reports were developed:
-
State of the Watershed Report (October 1997) – This report presents what is known about air, land and water in the watershed and includes information on:
