City of Hamilton – Public Works

Business Plan

The Public Works Business Plan, Innovate Now:
A Compass for Public Works to 2017, addresses issues and opportunities identified in a department-wide Employee Survey and outlines specific activities that will guide Public Works in providing services that bring our city to life and achieving our vision: To be recognized as the centre of environmental and innovative excellence in Canada.

The long range plan was developed in 2006-2007 and has been reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that it remains relevant. Most recently it was reviewed to verify alignment with the City's Corporate Strategic Plan that was approved by Council in 2008. Innovate Now serves as the Department's Business Plan and helps to focus its efforts in achieving the City's vision: To be the best place in Canada to raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic opportunities.

Innovate Now Vision Drivers:

  • Communities (Services our communities connect with and trust)
  • People (Skilled teams ready for any situation)
  • Processes (Smart processes to match our needs)
  • Finances (Sound financial management for the long haul)

Public Works Top Priorities:

Among the 17 priorities identified in Innovate Now, the top four immediate priorities are:

  • Be a leader in ‘greening’ and stewardship in the City
  • Engage the workforce; ensure workers are trained, mentored and involved in decision-making processes to find solutions to systematic issues
  • Ensure business planning processes are defined and aligned
  • Develop a multi-year budget process that is short, defined, predictable and well-communicated to stakeholders

The Public Works Department has already achieved many successes through the implementation of programs and services to enhance the quality of life in Hamilton.  Innovate Now will guide the department in accomplishing our top priorities for the next 10 years and better serving the needs of the community, employees and other stakeholders.
