The Road Occupancy Permit Policy ensures proper approval is obtained and compliance is met, to the satisfaction of the City of Hamilton, for the purposes of temporary/short-term lane closures and/or access, to provide safety to the public on all City of Hamilton roads and sidewalks.
Please note that the applicant will be liable for, and shall indemnify and save harmless the City for, any damages or injuries which may arise through the execution of the work for which the permit is issued.
The purpose of the Road Occupancy Permit Policy is to regulate any business or individual that applies to the City for approval to occupy a traffic lane(s) and to ensure:
Each year we issue approximately 600 permits to movers, renovation companies, sign companies, dumpster companies, etc.
The applicant is required to complete the "Road Occupancy Permit" form or in certain cases provide a letter of intent including the information mentioned below. Two working days notice are required in order to process and approve the permit (with the exception of permits for Film Productions that fall under the provisions of the Policy for Special Event Planning by the Economic Development Department).
The following information must be provided with all applications:
- Applicant’s name or Company name
- Full address
- Contact person
- Telephone and fax numbers
- Desired location with limits
- Duration
- Rain dates, if required
- Number of participants and vehicles
- Description of the event/type of work and purpose, specific use (i.e. new roof installation) including proposed encroachments on roads and/or sidewalks
- A route map/drawing
