December 8, 2011 - 2011 OPWA Project of the Year Award
The City of Hamilton's Woodward Avenue Water Treatment Plant Restoration project has received the 2011 Ontario Public Works Association Project of the Year Award in the Environment, Greater than $10 million Category. This award will be presented to the City of Hamilton on January 26, 2012. |

Two of Hamilton's events in 2010 were highlighed in the Ontario Water Works Association's Ontario Pipeline Magazine. The World Water Day Walkathon and the Gore Fountain Dedication were highlighted. |

The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Toronto Chapter OVATION Awards presented the Water and Wastewater Group for the City of Hamilton with the distinction of Excellence in the Publications category for the 2010 OVATION Awards. Toronto boasts the largest chapter of IABC in the world and offers the communications profession an opportunity to present its best work.
The Award of Excellence was for the 2010 Services Overview and Rate Book and was presented to Janet Vandehaar and Peter Bromely from the Water and Wastewater Group at the Ovations Gala Celebration on May 6, 2010 |

On February 23, 2010 the Water and Wastewater Group achieved International Recognition for its Strategic Business Plan and associated Report Card from the Association of Strategic Planning.
Competition for this award is judged according to the absolute standard set by the late Dr. Richard Goodman of UCLA. The award criteria are rigorous, and set the bar extremely high for a company or organization to receive this honor. Each submission is judged on the level of excellence in the strategy formulation process, use of industry and customer analysis, innovation, implementation and performance management in determining success of the plan.
The Association of Strategic Planning stated that the Water and Wastewater Group's Strategic Business Plan exhibits competency in the overall strategy formulation process, with a particular strength in the area of implementation and performance measures. The Honorable Recognition of the Water and Wastewater Group represents the only formal distinction granted this year across all categories. Past winners include California Space Authority, Chicago Medical School, US Army ARDEC. |

On October 2, 2009, Jim Harnum Senior Director of Environment & Sustainiable Infrastructure was recognized by the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists at the 2009 Provincial Honours & Awards Gala.
Jim was awarded the George Burwash Langford Memorial Award. This Award is presented to members who have distinguished themselves in their career and have brought recognition to the profession of engineering and applied science technology.
As a leader, Jim shaped the direction of the Water and Wastewater Division through strategic planning. Under Jim's directorship, the city commissioned the LEEDS silver certified Environmental Laboratory and Operations Control Centre, the Cogeneration Facility and is embarking upon the expansion of the wastewater treatment facilities.

Oct 15, 2008 - City of Hamilton wins 2nd Award for Woodward Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Centre
The City of Hamilton has received an AMO P.J. Marshall Plaque Award for excellence in innovation for the Woodward Avenue Water and Wastewater Treatment Cogeneration Facility. This is the second award this year honouring Hamilton Renewable Power Incorporated for its environmental leadership and innovation. The P.J. Marshall Award is an annual competitive process organized by AMO. Awards acknowledge municipalities who have demonstrated leadership and innovation in public-private partnerships. Hamilton’s cogeneration facility demonstrates innovation, tangible benefits, measured improved efficiency and effectiveness, use of innovative financing and transferability, all criteria of the award. Hamilton’s facility shows environmental, public health and cost saving benefits that can be applied in municipalities across Ontario.

In 2005, the City of Hamilton initiated a biogas cogeneration project at the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant. Hamilton was the first municipality in Ontario to receive approval from the Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation (OEFC) to build a generator for sustainable green energy. June 11, 2008 Hamilton's first annual Children's Water Festival garners award from BARC The Water and Wastewater Division in Hamilton’s Public Works Department was recognized for the implementation of its first annual Children’s Water Festival at the Bay Area Restoration Council’s (BARC) 16th Annual General Meeting last evening. BARC’s Implementation Award was presented to Jim Harnum, Senior Director of Water and Wastewater and Julia Wagner, Project Manager of Community Outreach by Jim Hudson, Executive Director of BARC and Scott Koblyk, President of the Board of Directors of BARC. The Children’s Water Festival was a three-day, interactive festival for grade 4 students. This annual award goes to agencies or organizations demonstrating outstanding commitment to the education of youth and improvement of Hamilton Harbour |

November 30, 2007 - Recognition by SISO On November 30, 2007 the Water and Wastewater Division was recognized by Settlement and Integration Services Organization (SISO) Hamilton for offering internships to Foreign Trained Professionals. The division is pleased to help newcomers integrate into the Canadian mosaic. Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Honourable Mike Colle, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, were in attendance, along with over 100 community members and the media.

November 8th, 2007 Woodward Environmental Laboratory wins Award of Merit for Architecture On November 8th, 2007, the Water and Wastewater division's Environmental Laboratory was recognized at the City of Hamilton's Urban Design and Architecture Awards with an Award of Merit for architecture. The facility will be the first LEEDs (leadership in energy and environmental design) certified lab in Ontario and the second in Canada.

May 31, 2004 - Passport to Prosperity The Water and Wastewater Division's Environmental Laboratory is very pleased to be a part of "Passport to Prosperity". Brian is one of Hamilton's Environmental Laboratory's returning Co-op students. He is presently completing his third placement at the Environmental Lab. Working at Hamilton's Environmental Lab has provided Brian with the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in the field of water and wastewater treatment. The City of Hamilton is pleased to work with Mohawk College and help students learn through work experience. | |

May, 2003 - Management Innovation Award The American Public Works Association awarded the National Water and Wastewater Benchmarking Initiative the Management Innovation Award. This project was selected from approximately 40 submissions. It is awarded for "the development and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the goals of public works in serving the public and protecting the environment". All participating municipalities received their award on August 25, 2003. Benchmarking is the ongoing process of comparing products, services and practices with those of similar organizations. The goal of the National Water and Wastewater Benchmarking Initiative is to improve the performance and efficiency of water, wastewater and storm water facilities. This is accomplished through the implementation of ongoing improvement measures and best management practices. Hamilton was one of a handful of municipalities that were actively involved in the early stages of this initiative. Participants from municipalities across Canada have grown consistently since 1997. |

June 23, 2003 - Congratulations Rosa! Rosa Gonzalez, Superintendent for the Environmental Laboratory, Public Works Department has been recognized by the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL) as this year's recipient of the Serge Villard Award. Ms. Gonzalez is the fourth recipient of the Serge Villard Award (formerly the "CAEAL Recognition Award") which is presented at CAEAL's Annual General Meeting to a CAEAL Assessor (or to a member of the CAEAL Advisory Panel) in recognition of exceptional contributions to CAEAL as an assessor or as a member of the Panel. |

Member laboratories participate in rigorous programs of proficiency testing and accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to generate high quality data.

The City of Hamilton's Environmental Laboratory is located on the Woodward Avenue Treatment Plant site. The Laboratory is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), in co-operation with the CAEAL, for a number of specific environmental tests. CAEAL’s recognition of Rosa Gonzalez’s efforts not only elevates her personal stature within this important industry, but also elevates the prominence of the City of Hamilton as an industry leader. | | | |
