            Water Meter Program

Water is one of our most precious natural resources.  Residents use water for drinking, bathing, and household chores.  During the summer months water usage can increase by 50%, when residents are filling their pools and watering their lawns and gardens.

Hamilton is working towards a sustainable level of funding for its Water and Wastewater services.  Sustainable funding will ensure Hamilton's ability to supply, treat, and deliver water to its residents, treat the wastewater and implement the necessary infrastructure upgrades.

The City initiated its Water Meter Project in the spring of 2002 and  contracted the Water Wise Water Meter Installation team to implement the program.   To date, 99.8% of Hamilton's homes have water meters installed.

Residents who have chosen not to permit the installation of water meter and remote reading device will be charged a double flat rate for water and sewer each year in accordance with Waterworks By-law R84-026.

Environment Canada Quickfacts:

  • Water consumption usually drops 18-25% after a water meter is installed.

  • Toilets (while consuming nearly one quarter of our municipal water supply) use over 40% more water than needed
