Introduction

This information is designed to outline the Primary Care Paramedic recruitment process and answer some of your questions. Included you will find an outline of time frames to assist in planning your participation in this process and the time commitment required.   

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DATES ARE TENTATIVE AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Applications

Applications will only be accepted as a complete package. Applicants missing required documents will not be looked at for further progression in the process.

The following documentation must be submitted at time of application:

  • City of Hamilton Primary Care Paramedic Application Form
  • Resume
  • Copy – front and back - of a valid Class "F" Driver's Licence
  • Copy of current CPR and First Aid Certificates
  • AEMCA or letter of registration to write AEMCA testing
  • Diploma from an approved Ontario Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Training Program or letter of good standing from an approved Ontario Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Training Program indicating graduation date
  • High School Diploma or official transcript
  • Letter indicating proof of completion of all mandatory MOHLTC core programs (if graduated before 2005)
  • Copies of any relevant certifications (i.e. BA, BSc, ACLS, Base Hospital, PALS, BTLS etc.)
  • Completed Reference Consent Form (included in this package) listing three (3) references. References must be employment-related in a reporting capacity. References will only be contacted if you are proceeding through the next steps in the recruitment process following the interview.

** Note: If you are a recent graduate and you advance to the interview stage, we will require a reference from your main preceptor. **

2. Process Phases

a) Written Exam: Monday, September 28th, 2009
All those who have submitted a complete application package are invited to write the exam. You will not be contacted further regarding testing. Testing will be held:

  • Monday, September 28th, 2009, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    Registration at 6:00 p.m.
  • Location: Wentworth Room, Ground Floor, Hamilton Convention Centre, 1 Summers Lane, Hamilton, ON L8P 4Y2 www.hecfi.on.ca

Photo ID will be required at the written exam and at each phase of the process.

b) Interviews will be held from October 13th to October 19th, 2009

c) Candidates moving to Next Steps will be contacted by October 22nd, 2009

d) Next Steps:

  • Physical Assessment:  October 26th, 2009
  • Reference Checks:  October 26th to 30th, 2009
  • Blood work and ECG Results:  Due October 28th, 2009
  • Meet all MOHLTC Requirements:  November 2nd, 2009
  • Proof of Immunization:  November 2nd, 2009
  • Driver’s Abstract Search:  November 2nd, 2009
  • Police Clearance (Vulnerable Sector Search):  Due November 4th, 2009
  • Medical:  November 11th, 2009
  • Base Hospital Testing:  November 16th, 2009

e) New Paramedic Orientation and Training Start Date:  Monday, November 30th, 2009

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DATES ARE TENTATIVE AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

You will be required to be successful/pass each phase of the process in order to be placed on the eligibility list to be hired as a Primary Care Paramedic. Once on the eligibility list, as vacancies arise, you will be considered for employment pursuant to your standing on the list.

Process

It is the responsibility of the applicant to supply qualifications, licences and related experience relevant to the qualifications outlined in the job description with their completed application package. A resume outlining your experiences must be attached.

Applications and all required documentation must reach Human Resources by the closing date of Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by 4:30 p.m. or they will not be considered.

Testing will be held:

  • Monday, September 28th, 2009, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Registration at 6:00 p.m.

You will need to achieve a minimum of 75% to be successful in the testing phase of the competition. Please note, achieving 75% in the testing phase does not guarantee an interview.

The Interview

You will be asked a series of questions related to the duties of a Primary Care Paramedic. These can be in the form of knowledge based, situational based and behavioural based questions.

After the Interview

If continuing in the recruitment process, the next steps will be as follows:

  • Physical Assessment
  • Reference Checks
  • Blood Work and ECG
  • Meet all requirements for MOHLTC Identification
  • Proof of Immunization as outlined in Table 1 Part A of Ambulance Service Communicable Disease Standards
  • Proof that candidate is free of communicable diseases listed in Table 1 Part B of Ambulance Service Communicable Disease Standards
  • Driver’s Abstract Search
  • Police Clearance - Vulnerable Sector Screening Search
  • Medical (administered by our physician)
  • Successful certification in Hamilton Base Hospital Symptom Relief and Semi-automatic Defibrillation
  • Verify in writing that you understand that a regular part time paramedic will be assigned two shifts in a two week pay period with a consistent day of the week or consistent shift pattern as determined and assigned by the employer with the advance notice as required. Additional shifts will be assigned in accordance with the staff availability and the employers need to fill shifts.
