VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER RECRUITMENT 2009

Hamilton Emergency Services - Fire are accepting applications for Volunteer  Firefighters for Station 14 (Elfrida), Station 16 (Stoney Creek), Station 17 (Stoney Creek), Station 18 (Binbrook), Station 19 (Mount Hope), Station 21 (Ancaster), Station 24 (Waterdown), Station 25 (Greensville), Station 26 (Lynden), Station 27 (Rockton) and Station 28 (Freelton).

RE: VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER - RECRUITMENT 2009

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY

Applicant must live within the “primary response area” of the station of choice, approximately 8 km and within a 5 minute drive. Please ask to see the “Response Area Booklet” and check off the station that is applicable on the application form. Please note that the area of Meadowlands in Ancaster is not within the 5 minute response time of Station 21.

If you do not live within the primary response area, your application will be rejected.

There are other mandatory conditions to be fulfilled in order to be a Volunteer Firefighter:

1. You must provide accurate, complete and signed application and test registration forms by the stipulated deadline. You must provide the necessary documentation to support your qualifications.

2. You must submit a clear Police Clearance Vulnerable Sector Search, free of any convictions for which a pardon has not been granted, obtained at your own expense from Hamilton Police Services, upon receiving a conditional offer of employment.

3. You must have a valid driver’s licence in good standing with less than seven (7) demerit points. Hamilton Emergency Services - Fire (HES - Fire) will obtain the abstract.

4. You must successfully pass a written aptitude test and a physical agility test.

5. You must successfully pass an interview process.

6. You must provide three (3) positive references.

7. You must successfully complete the required medical evaluation by a physician designated by HES - Fire.

8. You must successfully complete the recruit training program.

9. You must agree to certain employment conditions in order to be employed, and to remain employed, as a Volunteer Firefighter.

Application packages consisting of the application, test registration, and availability forms are available at Human Resources and the Municipal Service Centres listed on the job posting included in this package. As well, the application package will be available on line at www.hamilton.ca/fire - click on ”Careers” in the left menu bar.

Your completed application package must be submitted to any one of the Municipal Service Centres or Human Resources no later then 4:30PM on Friday, October 16th, 2009.

PROCESS

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DATES ARE TENTATIVE AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Each applicant must apply and register by completing the Application, Test Registration, and Availability Forms. A resume may be attached to the application package. Please ensure that the completed application package and all supporting documentation is submitted by 4:30pm on Friday, October 16th, 2009 or the applicant will not be considered further in the process.

Applicants must report to the testing location on their first selected date, unless otherwise notified. Please retain this information for future reference. Photo identification is required at time of testing and throughout the process.

Please Note: Applicants must be successful at the written aptitude test in the morning to move forward to the physical agility test in the afternoon. Applicants must be successful at each phase of the process in order to move to the next phase.

If screened into the process, applicants will be required to attend one of our testing dates:

1. Date: Saturday, November 07th, 2009

Registration: 08:00 – 08:45 hrs

Written Aptitude: 09:00 – 11:00 hrs

Break: 11:00 – 12:00 hrs

Physical Agility: 12:30 – 4:00 hrs

2. Date: Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Registration: 08:00 – 08:45 hrs

Written Aptitude: 09:00 – 11:00 hrs

Break: 11:00 – 12:00 hrs

Physical Agility: 12:00 – 4:00 hrs

Location: Station 18, 2626 Highway 56, Binbrook

· Valid Photo ID is required for registration and before each test.

· Persons who arrive late (up to 30 minutes) for the aptitude testing may still write but will not be given extra time.

· Persons arriving more than 30 minutes late will not be eligible to write the aptitude test.

· Paper and pencils will be provided. Calculators are not permitted.

· Bring a change of clothes (active wear – running shoes and gym clothes) to complete the physical agility test. Change facilities are available.

· Applicants will be required to complete a Reference Consent Form and provide contact information for three (3) references at the time of testing. References will only be contacted if an offer of employment is under consideration.

Please note: Successfully passing both the written aptitude and physical agility tests does not guarantee an interview. Interviews will be scheduled for of the week of November 21st to November 28th, 2009.

Applicants who successfully pass the interview and receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to attend a medical evaluation to be scheduled in January, 2010, dates to be determined.

NOTE:

  • Photo ID is required at every phase of the process
  • Successful applicants will attend a recruit training course twice a week.
  • Further details of the position and remuneration will be discussed at the interview.
  • This is a unionized position, represented by the Christian Labour Association of Canada, Local 911.

Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training

2009

Hamilton Emergency Services - Fire Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training Program for 2010 will be a concise, 250 hour training program that will include the following:

• Information session – February, 2010, location and date to be determined

• Start date – February, 2010, date to be determined

• Duration – 250 hours approximately

• Conclusion – to be determined

• Requirement – Candidates are expected to attend theoretical and practical training twice a week from onset to conclusion where indicated. This includes one week night and Saturday per week. Most training will occur at either Station #18, 2636 Highway #56, Binbrook. Training locations subject to change. Candidates are expected to commit to a minimum of 80% attendance. In addition, all candidates are expected to achieve 75% or greater on assigned tests/examinations in order to successfully complete the program.

• Core training – Candidates will receive theoretical and practical training for live fire suppression in both residential and high rise structures, vehicle fires, medical training, auto extrication, air brake endorsement, and defensive driving. Additional training at the conclusion of the Recruit Training Program with our Driving Instructor will qualify the candidate to upgrade his/her licence to a “DZ” where required.

After recruit training, regular training is presently conducted on weeknights and occasionally on weekends. Hamilton Emergency Services - Fire (HES - Fire) takes pride in providing one of the best training programs in the Ontario Fire Service.
