Putting your food scraps and other organics in your green bin is an easy way to get down to one bag of garbage or less each week. A green bin is a large green, strong plastic container on wheels that you put your household food scraps and organic waste in. Organic means that it came from plants or animals and is natural food for bugs and bacteria. When bugs and bacteria turn organic waste into compost it is called composting. The nutrient rich soil product that is made from composting is called compost.

Food scraps and organics are picked up from your green bin every week. Your green bin must be placed at the curb in front of your property between 7:00 p.m. on the evening before and 7:00 a.m. on the morning of your scheduled waste collection day.

Damaged green carts
Gentle handling of your green cart will help it last longer. If your green cart gets damaged or cracks under normal use, call us at 905-546-CITY (2489) to arrange for a replacement. You must present your broken cart before receiving a replacement. A small fee may apply.

Lost or stolen green carts
Write your address on your green cart when you receive it. This will help you keep track of it. The City does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen green carts.

Purchasing a new green cart
You can purchase a replacement green cart for $25 + HST. Call 905-546-CITY (2489) for details.

Replacement mini bins
The City will not replace mini bins. You can use a container such as an empty ice cream tub, or purchase a mini bin at a local retailer.
