Locke Street Public Art Project
The Locke Street Public Art Competiton
Artist Simon Frank's proposal Concrete Poetry has been awarded the $40,000 public art commission for Locke Street South.
Mr. Frank’s proposal scored the highest of seven proposals submitted to the Locke Street Public Art Competition in the spring. Each proposal was reviewed and scored by a jury of volunteer citizens representing local community groups and arts organizations. The jury was provided with technical advice from City of Hamilton and Horizon Utilities staff.
Proposals were scored based on artistic excellence and response to context as well as on technical concerns such as public safety and ongoing maintenance. The top three scoring proposals were posted on the city website and at the Locke Street Branch of the Hamilton Public Library for public comment. Additional scores were assigned based on this consultation and interviews with the three finalists.
The jury and Culture Division staff extend their appreciation and thanks to all of the artists that submitted proposals especially the other finalists, Philip Toms for hOley pOley and Bryce Kanbara and Brian Kelly for Untitled.
