Hamilton is gearing up for over 1500 participants and their supporters who are expected to attend and participate in Actifest 2006 August 14-16th. With 15 events and 1 demonstration sport, there will be plenty of opportunities for older adults 55+ to get involved and “get moving”.
The Games Organizing Committee has adopted the slogan, “Seniors on the Move” and are encouraging participants to stay active to help reduce the risk of the illness and injury that can affect adults as they enter into their senior years. Studies have revealed that no factor contributed as much to life satisfaction and social integration of older adults as leisure participation. What better reason do you need to get involved with Actifest?
There are 15 sanctioned events and one demonstration sport being offered that allow for participation by all older adults, and they are as follows:
| Carpet Bowling |
Golf |
Contract Bridge |
Darts |
| Lawn Bowling |
Tennis |
Cribbage |
Horseshoes |
| 5-pin Bowling |
Swimming |
Bid Euchre |
Shuffleboard |
| Bocce |
Walking |
Euchre |
|
Basketball Shootout is this year’s demonstration sport.
Forty districts throughout Ontario are represented at the Games and participants are chosen through a series of regional qualification events. Winners from the district qualifiers are offered the opportunity to compete against their provincial counterparts to determine provincial champions.
The Games Organizing Committee is working hard to make these Games even better than those held in Hamilton in 1992 – and those, we’re told, were fabulous Games – so we’ve got our work cut out for us! We’ve got some great plans for the opening and closing ceremonies, fabulous social activities being offered, comfortable accommodations at McMaster University, Games sites that are second to none, and an outgoing and energetic Games Organizing Committee working hard to ensure these are the best Games yet!
Our Games Coordinator, Rikki Frith, is happy to answer any questions you might have about the Games, and can be reached at 905-546-2424, x1694 or via email at actifest@hamilton.ca .
Looking forward to seeing you in Hamilton August 14th-16th!
