    How do I lease the City boulevard adjacent to my business for parking purposes?

    To obtain information on how to lease the City boulevard for business parking purposes, contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System at (905) 540-6000 and speak to a Parking Technologist who will advise you on the procedures.

    Am I allowed to park on or over the sidewalk, or my front lawn to get an extra vehicle on my driveway?

    No. Parking over the City sidewalk or on a boulevard between the sidewalk and the roadway is not permitted.

    Vehicles must be parked on an approved surface such as concrete, asphalt or gravel/stone. It is a violation to park a vehicle on the front lawn. Vehicles should be parked on a driveway or on the street where permitted. Contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Driveway Investigator at 905-546-2424, Ext. 4578 for information on the permit application process.

    The parking equipment (parking meter/pay and display machines) took my money but did not give me the appropriate time. What can I do?

    Call (905) 540-6000 to report the malfunction.

    If it is a parking meter, please provide the number attached to the parking meter and the general location.

    If it is a pay and display machine, please provide the number and/or location of the Car Park.

    If you received a parking ticket, you can discuss it with an Enforcement Adjudicator Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 80 Main Street West (opposite City Hall). The Adjudicator will contact Parking Operations if there is a problem with the equipment.

    How do I report an illegally parked or abandoned vehicle?

    To report an illegally parked vehicle, call the Hamilton Municipal Parking System office at (905) 540-6000 Sunday from10:00 p.m. to Sunday at 6:00 a.m. with the location, make, and violation. Your call will be dispatched promptly to a Parking Control Officer.

    To report an illegally parked vehicle from Sunday at 6:00 a.m. to Sunday at 10:00 p.m., or on a statutory holiday contact the Hamilton Police Services non-emergency line at (905) 546-4925.

    If you observe a vehicle that has been abandoned on a City street or you are a private property owner or agent (a person who has been given approval by the owner of the property to represent them), and have an abandoned vehicle on your premises, you may contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System at (905) 540-6000, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm to report it.

    Do I need approval to park my vehicle in my front yard?

    Where do I obtain a Ministry of Transportation Ontario disabled persons parking permit and where does it allow me to park?

    For information on the permit, you can call the Ministry of Transportation at (905) 577-4100.

    Application forms are available from your medical practitioner or can obtained from any of the following Ministry of Transportation branches:

    • 865 Upper James Street, Hamilton, (905) 385-3336
    • 17 King Street East, Dundas, (905) 627-0667

    Please note: Your doctor must complete and sign the application form.

    With the MTO disabled persons parking permit displayed in your windshield, you are exempt from:

    • Paying at on-street parking meters up to a maximum of 3 hours, after which the vehicle must be moved.
    • Paying at municipal CarParks except when the facility is attended by an employee collecting fees.
    • Time limit restrictions posted on City streets up to a maximum of 12 hours.

    Note: Many streets with parking meters and time limits are also rush hour routes which prohibit all vehicles from stopping during the times indicated on the signs. Most major (main) streets are posted with rush hour parking restrictions and may have time limits or metered parking. Parking during rush hour is strictly prohibited and a Ministry of Transportation Disabled Permit does not exempt any vehicle from rush hour route regulations

    Where can I find information on putting in a new driveway approach / ramp, widening an existing driveway approach / ramp or requesting maintenance on my driveway approach / ramp?

    To install a new driveway approach / ramp, even if it is temporary, on your property, you must obtain a Driveway Access permit.  For information on the application process, please contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Driveway Investigator at 905-546-2424x4578.

    To widen an existing driveway approach / ramp on your property, approval is required from the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Driveway Investigator.  For information, contact 905-546-2424x4578.

    If you have been approved for the installation, the Public Works Roads District staff in your area will provide you with a quiote or they will give you a list of authorized bonded contractors that you can contact.

    Once you have paid for the installation / widening from the Driveway Investigator, please contact the Public Works Roads District in your area.

    If your existing driveway approach / ramp needs maintenance (it's breaking apart, crumbling, eneven, too hight or too low), please contact the Public Works Roads District in your area to report the problem.

    How do I purchase an on-street residential parking permit and how do I get a refund if I move?

    You can purchase an on-street residential parking permit at the Hamilton Municipal Parking System office located at 80 Main Street West (opposite City Hall). Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    You are required to present your vehicle ownership certificate as proof that you are a resident of the street on which you are requesting the parking permit to park your vehicle. If the address on your vehicle ownership is out of date, please complete a change of address at a Ministry of Transportation office prior to visiting our office.

    On-street parking permits cost $75.35 + HST. The charge is pro-rated for a portion of the month. All permits expire on December 31st.

    If you are moving and no longer require the permit you can return it in person to the Hamilton Municipal Parking System at 80 Main St W or you can mail the permit into the Hamilton Municipal Parking System, 80 Main Street West, Hamilton ON, L8P 1H6. The refund will be processed and mailed from Accounts Payable and it will take approximately 4-6 weeks to receive your refund. Please include a forwarding address where the cheque will be mailed.

    Can I park my car overnight on City streets?

    Parking in Hamilton is limited to twelve hours unless otherwise posted. Parking is prohibited on all through streets between the hours of 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. This regulation is posted at all major entrances to the City. These prohibitions are in place to ensure that all corrective, scheduled or other road maintenance can be completed. Through streets are those city roadways that display rush hour, snow route signage and/or are main bus routes. You may contact our customer service representatives at (905) 540-6000 to determine whether or not a particular street is considered a through street.

    How can I get a monthly parking permit in a Municipal Car Park and what is the cost?

    Hamilton – Availability and cost vary at each Car Park; contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Office at (905) 540-6000 for details or visit our website below.

    Dundas – Availability and cost may vary at each Car Park.  You may obtain a permit by calling (905) 546-2424 Extension 1209 or visiting the Dundas Municipal Service Centre.

    Stoney Creek – The Car Park at 14 Mountain Avenue South has permits at the monthly rate of $35.00, availability may vary. To obtain a permit contact the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Office at (905) 540-6000.

    Ancaster, Flamborough, Glanbrook – Not applicable.

    How do I pay a parking ticket? 

    You have a number of options when paying a parking ticket you received in Hamilton.

    Pay by mail:
    By mailing a cheque to the address on the ticket. Please make cheque payable to the City of Hamilton.

    Pay in person:
    Cash, cheque, debit card or credit card (Visa, MasterCard)  is accepted at the following locations:
    (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) 

    • Hamilton City Hall, Citizen Service Centre, 71 Main Street W, Hamilton
    • Hamilton Municipal Parking System Office, 80 Main Street West, Hamilton (opposite City Hall)

    Online payments:
    Online payment is available at www.hamilton.ca  or www.paytickets.ca.
    A $1.50 convenience fee applies to online payments.

    Drop off boxes:

    • Hamilton City Hall (rear entrance), 71 Main Street West
    • Outside the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Office, 80 Main Street West
    • Municipal Service Centres (listed above)

    Note: Do not deposit cash into the drop boxes.

    To discuss or review your parking ticket, you may do so in person between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, at the First Attendance Facility, located in the Hamilton Municipal Parking System office, 80 Main Street West (opposite Hamilton City Hall). Please bring your parking ticket or notice with you.

    If you live out of town or are disabled, you can have someone attend on your behalf to the First Attendance Facility.

    Trial requests must be requested and signed for at the Hamilton Municipal Parking System Office by either the owner of the vehicle or the vehicle owner’s authorized agent (a person who has been given approval by the owner of the vehicle to represent them).

    How do I change the parking regulations on my street?

    Reserved permit parking and time limit parking can be implemented on streets, or parts of streets, when a majority of residents through a petition, request the regulation and pending City Council’s approval of a by-law.
