Weather forecasts are monitored for conditions that can be hazardous to health. A heat event will occur when the weather calls for 1 day with 40 or greater humidex and notification will be sent to radio and TV with information on how to stay cool.
Extreme heat can cause heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death. Public are advised to take precautions to reduce their risk of heat-related illnesses and to keep a lookout for the most vulnerable in your community.

During a Heat Advisory Stage 1
During a Heat Advisory Stage 1 the following cool places will provide an air conditioned place to cool off during regular business hours.

During a Heat Warning Stage 2
Water Distribution Program
During a Heat Warning Stage 2 all Cool Places will be operating. The Salvation Army will also distribute bottled water between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm at Gore Park (map).
Additional Cool Places
During a Heat Warning Stage 2 these additional cool places will provide an air conditioned place to cool off during regular business hours.
During a Heat Alert Stage 3
When a Heat Alert is issued by the Office of the Medical Officer of Health all community partners, including the City of Hamilton, review and intensify community response activities in accordance with the severity and duration of the heat event.
All activities and resources that were activated in Stages 1 and 2 will continue for the duration of the heat event.
