Support Programs in Hamilton

There are a variety of support programs and services to assist Hamilton residents. This list provides contact information and answers to basic questions for people in need or for those acting on their behalf.

Canada Learning Bond Event

Canada Learning Bond will be offering $500 to help you start saving for your child's future.
Where: St. Helen's @ McQuesten (785 Britannia Ave, Hamilton)
When: Thursday, September 25 from 3 pm to 7pm and Friday, September 26 from 9am to noon.

  • Affordable Transit Pass Program
    If you're working, living with a low income or receiving Ontario Works or ODSP and are a Hamilton resident, you may be eligible to buy an HSR Adult Monthly Transit Pass for half price.
  • Child Care and Parenting
    Various programs available to assist parents with financial assistance for child care, finding the right child care, support for pregnant and parenting teens to help them stay in school.
  • Community Health Bus
    The Community Health Bus is a mobile outreach clinic providing public health nursing and dental services free of charge to residents of the City of Hamilton.
  • Dental Services
    Mandatory and discretionary dental services are available to those receiving Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities, low income and their families.
  • Funerals, Burials & Cremations
    The City of Hamilton provides financial assistance on behalf of deceased Hamilton residents who do may not be able to cover the cost of a basic funeral, burial and/or cremation.
  • Helping Hands
    Helping Hands provides home support to eligible low income senior citizens and the disabled. Services include house cleaning, rug shampooing, window cleaning, laundry, air conditioner installation, spring and fall yard clean-up, lawn and yard maintenance, snow shoveling and packing.
  • Home Management Program
    Programs to teach individuals, families and groups, through practical instruction and coaching, the skills necessary to be more successful and independent in their day to day living.
  • Housing Support Programs for Low-Income Households
    Information about Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) for homeowners, the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program–Homeownership (COAHP-HO), the Rent Bank Program and more.
  • Ontario Works Benefits
    Information on how to apply for financial assistance through Ontario Works benefits.
  • Recreation Fee Assistance
    The Recreation Fee Assistance Program is to provide City of Hamilton residents living with a low income the opportunity to participate in organized sports and recreation programs.
  • Snow Angels
    Volunteer Hamilton in partnership with the City of Hamilton is offering a volunteer snow removal service for eligible seniors and persons with physical disabilities.
  • Special Supports Program
    The Special Supports Program provides funding for assistive devices (bath aids, grab bars, toilet aids), prosthetics, diabetic supplies, hearing aids custom foot orthotics and orthopectic footwear, hospital beds, surgical supplies, incontinent supplies, mobility aids, wheelchair batteries and repairs, dental services and dentures, medical transportation, eye glasses, funerals and burials, bath equipment, day programs and other services and special items.

Please note: Special Supports Program does not fund equipment, devices or services that have already been ordered or purchased. Do not order or purchase equipment prior to receiving funding approval.

  • Tax Rebate Program
    Low Income Deferrals - Low income seniors or disabled persons may defer their tax increase. Seniors (65+) Tax Rebate Program - Annual property tax credit available for seniors.
  • Utilities Arrears Program
    Funds to help low income households, Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program pay for utility arrears, disconnection and security deposits.

  • Assistive Devices Program - Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
    The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) provides support and funding to Ontario residents who have long-term physical disabilities and provides access to personalized assistive devices appropriate for the individual’s basic needs.
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) - Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services
    This program is for people with disabilities who are in financial need, or who want and are able to work and need support. Ontarians 65 years or older who are not eligible for Old Age Security may also qualify for ODSP supports if they are in financial need.
  • Ontario Drug Benefit : Trillium Drug Program
    This program is intended for Ontario residents who have a valid Ontario Health Card and who have high prescription drug costs in relation to their net household income.
