Strategic and Environmental Planning

The Strategic and Environmental Planning Section provides support to the balance of the Public Works Department through the development of strategic and infrastructure plans and capital budgets so that the Public Works Department can provide quality services to the citizens of Hamilton. This mission is achieved through sustainable infrastructure planning through the planning process to include the natural, social, and environmental implications, mitigation, and design for infrastructure projects. 

Strategic and Environmental Planning undertakes the planning and preliminary design for infrastructure through the following programs:
  • Class Environmental Assessments for Municipal Infrastructure Projects

  • Master Plans for Transportation and Stormwater Infrastructure

  • Functional Plans for Infrastructure Projects

  • Municipal Act Funding Approvals for Servicing Extensions

  • Integrated Management System for Health and Safety and the Environment for Public Works

In addition to the above programs, the Section is responsible for a number of Inter-Governmental projects that have implications for the City of Hamilton.
