Public Health Inspectors routinely visit nearly 3,000 food premises throughout Hamilton. Their role is to promote safe food handling practices by enforcing the Ontario Food Premise Regulation. Food premises in violation of this Regulation are required to permanently correct faults within a time period specified by Inspectors. Orders under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA), including closure of an establishment, can also be issued by Public Health Inspectors if violations pose an immediate risk to patrons.
Establishments convicted of failing to comply with the Ontario Food Premises Regulation or failing to obey an Order can be fined. Fines range from $50.00 for minor infractions to $25,000. per day for a corporation failing to obey an Order.
