Genital Chlamydia
The number of chlamydia cases has been increasing over the past 10 years. In 2009 there were 1248 cases. Female rates are double that of males. Females aged 19-24 and males aged 20-24 continue to have the highest incidence.
Gonorrhea
The number of gonorrhea cases decreased from 240 in 2006, to 139 in 2009. There was an upward trend in cases between 1999 and 2006, but the trend seems to have reversed. The rate among females aged 15 to 19 years has remained high at 24 cases.
HIV
In 2009 there were 31 new HIV infections reported in the City of Hamilton. These infections were mainly seen in older men and women between the ages of 20-59 years of age.
In the past 10 years the number of reported cases of male HIV infections has decresed while the number of HIV infections in women has increased.
AIDS
In 2009, there were 4 cases of AIDS reported. All cases were diagnosed with clinical AIDS concurrent with recognition of HIV infection and are therefore included in 31 HIV reported infections.
Syphilis
There were 28 reported cases of infectious syphilis cases in Hamilton in 2009.
STD Control
In 2004, the STD and Sexual Health Program implemented enhanced case management for those who test positive for infectious syphilis, gonorrhea or HIV.These clients must name their sexual partners, by providing contact information to Public Health so that a public health nurse can contact these partners either directly or by , having a public health nurse contact them.
