Tobacco is more than a health issue!
Tobacco Industry products do more than cause a global public health epidemic. Visit Big Tobacco Sucks to learn more about animal cruelty, corporate globalization, racial, discriminatory and sexist marketing tactics, child labour, worker exploitation, ecological destruction and genetic engineering.
Point of Sale Purchasing Tobacco advertising and sponsorship has been banned since October 1, 2003, yet the tobacco industry spends over $77 million for, “powerwalls” (the display of cigarettes behind convenience store counters) and other point-of-purchase incentives at the retailer level to market their deadly product.
Point–of-sale promotions are visible to all customers including children, non-smokers and former smokers. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act includes a ban on countertop tobacco retail displays and tobacco promotions as of June 1, 2006. A full ban on tobacco retail displays will occur on June 1, 2008. This legislation will reduce tobacco use, protect children from exposure to tobacco promotion, reduce crime, and will reduce youth access to tobacco products.
Exposé This “by-youth-for-youth” tobacco industry project is located in Ottawa. Exposé seeks to educate others on the dangers of tobacco and the manipulation strategies used by the tobacco industry.
