Tobacco-Free Living - Quitting Smoking

Quitting smoking takes time and can be a hard thing to do. Finding the method that is right for you is important.  By learning more about what methods are available and by planning ahead to prepare yourself for the challenges associated with quitting, you can improve your chances of success.

What should a quit plan involve?

A quit plan should help you to:
  • Keep track of your smoking
  • Practice quitting
  • Set a quit date
  • Get support from others to help you quit
  • Eliminate smoking "triggers"
And plan for:
  • Substitutes for smoking
  • Situations when you normally smoke
  • Dealing with cravings
  • Rewarding yourself many times a day
  • How to get back on track if you slip by smoking after your quit date

    The Canadian Cancer Society's Smokers' Helpline Online offers a personalized approach for those interested in breaking the habit at their own pace.  Complete the registration and provide a history of your smoking, previous quit attempts and use of cessation aids. You can participate in online support groups, receive a learning passport and quit meter that helps you stay motivated by reminding you of the important benefits of your decision to quit.

    For youth aged 12 to 18.  Learn about how to build a quit plan, how to deal with stress and the benefits of quitting.  Full of interactive activities and information.

Doctor, Dentist or Pharmacist:
Your doctor, pharmacist or dentist can be a good source of help and support when you are trying to quit smoking. Quitting "cold turkey" is not the only option you have. Your health professional can suggest products to help with the withdrawal symptoms. Some of these products can be purchased at a pharmacy without a prescription. Others need a prescription from your doctor. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist about these products, their possible side effects, proper use and possible interactions with other medications you may be using.
