By-law 11-080 - Prohibiting Smoking within City Parks and Recreation Properties
By-law No. 11-080 Prohibiting Smoking within City Parks and Recreation Properties will come into effect on May 31, 2012. This By-law will prohibit smoking in the following areas:
-
parks
- playgrounds
- recreation centre property
- arena and stadium property
- sports or playing fields
- skateboard parks
- beaches
- outdoor pools
- leash-free dog parks

The goals of this By-law include:
- protecting the health and safety of the community, especially children
- supporting local groups who use City facilities to promote healthy lifestyles
- reducing cigarette butt litter, environmental degradation and improving city image
- reducing risks of fire and health hazards for children
- positive role-modeling for children and youth to decrease the liklihood of them starting smoking
- providing smoke-free environments to encourage people who smoke to quit
