By-law 11-080 - Prohibiting Smoking within City Parks and Recreation Properties

By-law No. 11-080 Prohibiting Smoking within City Parks and Recreation Properties will come into effect on May 31, 2012.  This By-law will prohibit smoking in the following areas:
  • parks
  • playgrounds
  • recreation centre property
  • arena and stadium property
  • sports or playing fields
  • skateboard parks
  • beaches
  • outdoor pools
  • leash-free dog parks

The goals of this By-law include:

  • protecting the health and safety of the community, especially children
  • supporting local groups who use City facilities to promote healthy lifestyles
  • reducing cigarette butt litter, environmental degradation and improving city image
  • reducing risks of fire and health hazards for children
  • positive role-modeling for children and youth to decrease the liklihood of them starting smoking
  • providing smoke-free environments to encourage people who smoke to quit
