Healthy Workplace - Healthy Eating
In Hamilton, 64% of adults do not consume at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruit a day. (Source: City of Hamilton, Public Health & Community Services Department: Program Policy and Planning Division. (2002). Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.)
Tips for Your Workplace
- Promote awareness of healthy eating through signs, table tents, posters, newsletters and bulletin boards.
- Ensure healthy food choices are available in cafeterias, tuck shops, snack bars, and vending machines. Items to consider include whole grain bread products, vegetable and fruit choices, lower fat milk, yogurt and cheese products, leaner meats, fish options and lower fat vegetarian entrees.
- If your workplace has a cafeteria, engage a public health nutritionist to assist with the implementation of the Eat Smart! Workplace Program. This provincial program awards your cafeteria for high standards in healthy food choices, food safety, and non-smoking seating. For more information on the EatSmart! Workplace Cafeteria Program, send an email.
- Make it convenient for employees to bring their lunches and snacks from home. This means having kitchen facilities available with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle, and sink.
- Offer some healthy food choices during meetings and functions.
- Ensure work schedules permit adequate time for eating.
