Assistance for Hamilton Residents
Service Canada helps Canadians find jobs by offering job-search resources and income support while unemployed.
Employment Ontario helps Ontarians access employment programs and services including the Job Bank.

There are a variety of programs and services to assist Hamilton residents. Some of the programs have eligibility requirements.
Financial Assistance
- Tax rebate programs: information about rebate programs for low-income households, seniors and the disabled.
- Tax payment options: residents can call 905-546-CITY to discuss payment options.
- Apply for Ontario Works (OW): information on how to apply for OW. For residents waiting for Employment Insurance (EI), you may apply for OW and if eligible, receive benefits while waiting for EI. OW must be repaid when the EI benefits start.
- Child care fee subsidy: financial assistance for child care for eligible residents.
- Utilities arrears: help for low income households and participants on Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) to help pay for utility costs owing, disconnection and security deposits.
- Housing support programs: programs for low-income households, including the Rent Bank where eligible residents may apply for an interest-free loan to cover up to two months of rent owing.
- Affordable transit pass: if you're working, you may be eligible for an HSR Adult Monthly Transit Pass at half price.
Social and Health Services
- Dental services: some dental services are available for eligible residents.
- Home management: eligible individuals, families and groups can get the skills necessary to be more successful and independent in their day-to-day living.
- Community Health Bus: a mobile health, medical and dental clinic, providing free services to children, youth and adults, including dental treatment, immunization, health information, counseling and referrals to services.
- Quit smoking: programs in Hamilton to help you quit smoking.
- Healthy eating: general nutrition information and resources.
- Glasses and other health supports: eligible low-income residents can apply for assistive devices, prosthetics, diabetic supplies, hearing aids, eye glasses, etc.
- Parenting resources: prenatal and pregnancy resources, parenting resources, classes and workshops.
- Alcohol, drug and gambling services: treatment services for people affected by alcohol, drug and gambling problems
- Stress management: links and resources to manage stress.
