Housing Support Programs for Home Owners

Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP)

The City of Hamilton is the delivery agent on behalf of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for the "Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program".

What is Homeowner RRAP?

The Homeowner RRAP offers financial assistance to low-income households who own and occupy substandard housing to enable them to repair their dwellings to a minimum level of health and safety.

What is 'Persons with Disabilities RRAP'?

The Persons with Disabilities RRAP offers financial assistance to households occupied by persons with disabilities who require special modifications to improve accessibility to their residence.

Who is Eligible?

Homeowners may apply if the value of their house is below a certain value and if their household income is at or below certain levels that are based on the number of people in the household. Eligibility is limited to properties in need of major repair in one or more of the following categories: structural, electrical, plumbing, heating and fire safety.

How Much Assistance is Available?

Assistance is provided as a loan, all of which may be forgiven. That is to say, the maximum loan is $16,000, and the maximum amount which may be forgiven is $16,000. The amount of forgiveness depends on household income and is based on a percentage of the repair costs covered under the RRAP Program.

What Type of Repairs are Eligible?

The forgivable assistance is available only for mandatory repairs relating to health and safety and to extending the useful life of the property. It is important to keep in mind that this assistance is for basic mandatory repairs and not repairs to modernize or improve the appearance of your home. Work carried out before the Homeowner RRAP loan is approved in writing is not eligible.
