Support Programs - Dental Services

Mandatory Dental Program determined by the Ministry of Community and Social Services
Who can apply?
  • Dependent children (0-17 years) whose parents are Ontario Works (OW) participants
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) recipients, their spouses and dependent children (0-17 years)
  • Children whose parent(s) receive Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD)

Participants may contact a dentist of their choice. For OW children, a Dental Benefit Eligibility Card for the month of treatment must be provided to the dentist, this is provided monthly with the Ontario Works cheque/direct banking deposit statement. For ODSP and ACSD recipients, a dental card is provided monthly with the ODSP cheque/direct banking deposit statement. Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) sets the Schedule of Dental Services and Fees for this program.

Who can apply?

  • Ontario Works adults (age 18 and over)
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) dependent adults
    (other than applicant or spouse age 18 and over which are not covered on the ODSP Dental Card)
  • Low Income families and seniors (not on any social assistance programs)

Participants may contact a dentist of their choice and a Dental Benefit Eligibility Card for the month of treatment must be provided to the dentist.  ODSP dependent adults and low income individuals/families must contact Special Supports prior to visiting the dentist.  Low income families must contact Special Supports prior to visiting the dentist.

The discretionary dental program is limited and has some restrictions.
Items that may be covered:

  • examinations, x-ray and treatment limitations
  • fillings- both silver and white
  • restorations
  • root canal-front teeth only
  • extractions and surgery
  • general anesthesia and sedation- with limits

Items NOT covered:

  • cleaning and scaling
  • root canals on back teeth
  • crowns and bridges
  • orthodontics of any kind

The Schedule of Discretionary Dental Fees is distributed to local dentists.

Predeterminations for dentures:
At the applicant’s request the Dental office can send the predetermination by fax to Special Supports at 905-546-2476. When the predetermination is approved, a Special Supports Case Aide will mail the applicant an authorization letter to take to the dentist.
