Working together to douse arson

HAMILTON, ON – April 15, 2005 – Arson continues to be the number one cause of structure fires in Hamilton, resulting in millions of dollars in property damage and many injuries each year. Arson needlessly ties up firefighting crews, puts people in danger, lowers neighbourhood property values, and causes immeasurable losses to businesses and families who have had their lives and livelihoods disrupted.

In 2004, Hamilton Emergency Services responded to 169 arson-related fires that resulted in 11 injuries and almost $2 million in damage.

Hamilton Emergency Services has always maintained a proactive approach towards fighting arson with the development of new programs and campaigns in an attempt to minimize the impact of arson on the city and its residents.

Because the arson problem affects the entire city, Hamilton Emergency Services is looking to partner with the citizens of Hamilton and is asking for input from the public on what else can be done to combat arson.
