HAMILTON, ON – April 29, 2005 – The City of Hamilton, as part of its ongoing commitment to upgrading infrastructure, will be improving municipal services on Herkimer Street from Queen Street to Bay Street. Construction is expected to start May 2, 2005 and will take approximately three months to complete. The contract has been awarded to Rankin Construction.
During construction, there will be a full road closure on Herkimer Street from Caroline Street to Bay Street. It is anticipated the full road closure will begin on Monday, May 9, 2005 and be in effect for approximately five weeks. Vehicular access on Herkimer Street will be limited to local access only, this means only residents, workers, and emergency service vehicles will be allowed on the road. Signs will be posted. The work is being undertaken to protect the long-term value of the City’s transportation and infrastructure assets and help enhance the quality of life for Hamiltonians. Improvements along this road include: watermain replacement; sewer construction and replacement; and sidewalk and road reconstruction. Through watermain replacement the City can maintain its high standards of water quality and increase water volume for both residents and the fire hydrants. Sewer construction and replacement helps to minimize sewer blockages therefore enhance the protection against sewer back-ups. Upgrading road and sidewalk infrastructure on city streets helps to improve traffic flow and ensure safe travel in the future.
