Main Street West proceeds towards completion, crews will be paving overnight August 3 and 4

HAMILTON, ON –  July 29, 2005 – The City of Hamilton is pleased to be in the final stages of construction on Main Street West, between Cootes Drive and Gary Avenue in front of McMaster University and McMaster University Medical Centre.  Workers will be completing top course asphalt paving overnight on Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4 from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. each day.  Construction on Main Street West and the University’s Main Street Entrance are on schedule and will be completed in August.

The City endeavors to look for the most efficient and effective manner to complete construction projects while minimizing the impact to residents and motorists.  Overnight paving will lessen the traffic impacts during the increased daytime traffic hours, in addition to maintaining the integrity of the freshly laid asphalt mat.

During the overnight construction a minimum of one lane will be maintained in each direction.  Local and emergency access will continue.  Please expect delays.  Patients, visitors, university and hospital staff are advised to allow extra time to access the facilities and to park.   Signs will be posted as necessary.  Safety is our first concern, for both the public and our workers.

Upgrading infrastructure on City streets now, will improve traffic flow and ensure safe travel in the future.  The work is being undertaken to protect the long-term value of the City’s transportation assets.

Every effort will be made to complete the work in an expeditious manner and to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.  Maps describing the necessary detours are available online at http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mainstreet/MUMCentrancemap.pdf

We thank you for your co-operation and support during the construction season.
