HAMILTON, ON – July 20, 2005 –The City of Hamilton will be closing the Mary Street Bridge between Barton Street and Simcoe Street to vehicular traffic permanently on Friday, July 22 at 7:00 a.m. The bridge will remain open to pedestrian traffic.
Following an Environmental Assessment completed in 2004, which includes public input, it was decided as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to upgrading infrastructure that a pedestrian bridge will be placed at Mary Street and a new bridge at Ferguson Street will be constructed for vehicular traffic.
The decision to close the Mary Street bridge now has been undertaken to protect the health and well-being of the residents of Hamilton. Safety is our first concern. Although precautions have been taken with the Mary Street Bridge, it has experienced further deterioration and is no longer safe for vehicular traffic.
We thank you for your co-operation and support.
