HAMILTON, ON – July 5, 2005 – The City of Hamilton is seeking public input into the development of a new harmonized sign by-law. The new by-law will bring together existing by-laws from the former municipalities Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, and Stoney Creek.
“Sign regulations across Hamilton continue to differ in each of the former municipalities. In some cases, sign regulations are different on opposite sides of the same street,” said Dan Mousseau, Coordinator, Sign By-law. “A new sign by-law, in clear language, is needed for the City of Hamilton to ensure fairness and equity. It will provide a uniform set of rules for the sign industry, property and business owners and be easy to use and enforce. A good and effective sign by-law will contribute to the appearance and aesthetics of Hamilton.”
Public consultation with all stakeholders, including BIAs, Sign Associations, Community Groups, Ratepayer Associations, and Home Builders, is being held to determine community expectations for signs across the city. All sessions will be identical in content, so attendees can select the most convenient session.
“The signs we see on properties and buildings across Hamilton are the result of both the Sign By-law’s standards and the City’s enforcement of its regulations,” added Mousseau. “Appropriate sign standards and effective by-law enforcement are key factors for achieving and maintaining quality signage in a community. This is the top goal of the Hamilton Sign Study.”
Highly visible signs are a key element in what residents and visitors see along Hamilton’s streets. The signs help create the visual character of an area. Good signs in a community suit their context. They are sensitive to the character of the area, support its land uses and advance Hamilton’s community building objectives.
