Wise Water Use and You

HAMILTON , ON May 4, 2006 Learn how you can become a wise water user! The City of Hamilton and Green Venture are pleased to be bringing you the Wise Water Use Workshop Series. There will be three workshops held Saturday, May 6, 13 and 20, held at EcoHouse located at 22 Veevers Drive in Hamilton.

The topics for each of these workshops are as follows:

All About Healthy Lawns - Saturday, May 6th, 2006 - 10am - 12pm
Did you know that traditional lawns are responsible for a great deal of treated water consumption and their maintenance significantly contributes to air pollution? Learn about clover, limiting your lawn areas, organic lawn care and fertilizer, how to overseed or replace an existing lawn area, and beautiful, drought-tolerant groundcover.

Rain Gardens - Saturday, May 13th, 2006 - 10am-12pm
Residential stormwater run-off is a significant source of water pollution in our urban environment. Discover a new trend in capturing stormwater that is helping to improve water quality, recharge our groundwater resources, and eliminate wet or areas of your property that are prone to pooling water.
Discover how rain gardens are constructed, how they are used, how to conduct soil structure and percolation tests, and how to design a rain garden. Be the first on your street to install a rain garden and be the envy of your neighbours.

Wise Water Use Residential Retrofits - Saturday, May 20th, 2006 - 10am-12pm
Did you know that the average family of four can save up to $300.00 per year on water and hot water costs simply by installing a $20 low-flow showerhead? This workshop will focus on different solutions to reduce water consumption and, when hot water is used reduce hot water heating bills.
Topics will include toilet dams, identifying low-flow products, conducting flow-rate tests, checking for toilet leaks, installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators, replacing a leaky faucet gasket, checking for a leaky water meter and other leaky appliances. Also learn about rain barrels, several low-flow toilets (including dual flush, pressure assist, and composting models) and our tankless water heater.

Pre-registration is necessary to participate in the workshops. Contact Green Venture to register at 905-540-8787 or on-line http://www.ecohouse.ca/. Workshop fees are $5.00 per person and proceeds are in support of Green Venture.
