Green fleet test-drive and workshop event a huge success

HAMILTON , ON May 15, 2006 - Today, the cities of Hamilton and Toronto, and Fleet Challenge Ontario hosted the first annual Green Fleet Expo.

The Green Fleet Expo was organized to give fleet managers an opportunity to learn about new and emerging green technology, network with peers and learn about others’ experiences with incorporating environmentally-friendly technologies and practices into their management of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.

The event was officially opened by Councillor Paula Fletcher, the vice-chair of the Roundtable on the Environment and a big supporter of the City's Green Fleet initiative.

The cities of Toronto and Hamilton have taken a lead in transition their fleets to greener alternatives. Both cities have developed and are in the process of implementing green fleet transition plans. These plans look at replacing fossil fuel burning vehicles with environmentally-friendly alternatives.

On display at the Green Fleet Expo were various green fleet technologies being applied to vehicles and equipment across the province. Fleet managers and other officials had the opportunity to test and learn about the technology; including hybrid, biodiesel and natural gas.

“The idea behind this event was to open the eyes of fellow fleet managers, and sell them on green technology,” said Chris Hill, Manager of Central Fleet, City of Hamilton. “We would like all organizations in Ontario, if not Canada, to adopt a green fleet approach.”

Participants were able to test drive vehicles as well listen to speakers. Seminars included a joint presentation by Hamilton and Toronto on creating and implementing a green fleet plan, as well as an information seminar on biodiesel.

Participants included fleet managers from municipalities across the province, including Windsor, Thunder Bay, Mississauga and Waterloo. The Ministry of Transportation, CFB Borden and non-government organizations were also in attendance.
