Students learn first hand about Careers in Public Works

HAMILTON , ON – May 24, 2006 – Students from both the separate and public school boards were welcomed today to Public Works Career Day at Mohawk College. Mayor Di Ianni, Ronald Holgerson, Vice President of Mohawk College and Scott Stewart, General Manager of Public Works all provided greetings and words of wisdom on finding future successful career paths in Hamilton.

Public Works Career Day is part of Hamilton’s week-long celebration for National Public Works Week. Career Day provided an opportunity for young minds to learn about possible future careers in the Public Works Department. Students enjoyed on-site workshops for: Water, Wastewater and the Environmental Laboratory; Red Hill Valley Project; Mechanics; Parks, Forestry and Horticulture. Workshops were held at Mohawk College for Civil Engineering and Information Technology; Environmental; and Public Relations, Marketing and Customer Service. In addition, Mohawk College, McMaster University, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, Skilled Trades Alliance and the Ontario Water Operator Training Centre were on hand with displays that provided the students with all the information they needed to know about the education or training is that required for possible future career choices.

“This event presents a tremendous window of opportunity for not only the City, the Public Works Department, and the students,” said Scott Stewart, General Manager of Public Works. “I’m thrilled we have taken this step to provide these students with insight not only into the department but the people that provide the services that bring Hamilton to life.”

“Canada’s ageing workforce is expected to significantly impact business growth and productivity in the near future. We must strategically plan and be prepared to limit this impact in Hamilton,” said Mayor Di Ianni. “I applaud the efforts of Public Works to educate and entice our local youth to stay within our community while achieving admirable career goals.”
